Media Registration Opens for GSA Connects 2026 Geoscience Meeting in Denver

Reporters covering climate, water, minerals, and planetary exploration will find a deep well of stories in Denver this fall. Media registration is now open for GSA Connects 2026, the Geological Society of America’s annual gathering, scheduled for 11–14 October 2026 at the Colorado Convention Center. Working journalists, freelance science writers, and public information officers are invited to secure credentials, with preregistration strongly encouraged before early October.

Why this year matters

Geoscience sits at the heart of urgent public conversations: decarbonizing energy systems, securing critical minerals for clean technologies, managing drought and floods, and exploring our solar system. Denver—set against the still-enigmatic Rockies and shaped by a history of mining and water engineering—offers a living laboratory for these debates. The 2026 program is organized around three intersecting themes designed to illuminate Earth systems in motion and their implications for society.

  • Continents on the move: A century after continental drift reshaped Earth science, sessions will re-examine how plates assemble and break apart. A featured symposium will contrast “bottom-up” (deep mantle to surface) and “top-down” (surface geology to deep structure) approaches to reconstructing ancient Earth, exploring what each method reveals about past oceans, mountains, and climate.
  • Rivers under pressure: From headwaters to deltas, riverscapes are changing as climate extremes, land use, and infrastructure reshape flow regimes, sediment, and ecosystems. Sessions will connect the dots to flood risk, water security, and habitat stewardship—high-stakes issues across the American West and beyond.
  • Exploration from core to cosmos: New tools are blurring lines between terrestrial and planetary science. Expect research that spans Earth’s interior processes and surface environments as well as comparative studies of other worlds—knowledge that feeds back into energy, natural hazards, and resource strategies at home.

Spotlight lectures and high-profile sessions

  • Lunar field science returns: On Monday, 12 October, Kelsey Young will discuss how Artemis II is reshaping crewed scientific exploration of the Moon—and how field geology techniques honed on Earth are central to success on the lunar surface.
  • Presidential Address: On Sunday, 11 October, GSA President Glenn Thackray will reflect on the many pathways geoscientists take to impact society, followed by the annual awards ceremony.
  • Halbouty Distinguished Lecture: Paul Doss will explore the “critical zone”—the thin, life-sustaining skin of Earth where rock, soil, water, air, and organisms interact—at a moment of intensifying environmental stress.
  • Community and geoheritage: On Tuesday, 13 October, Marilyn Russell and Sabrina Kainz will share a community engagement model for connecting people with place and advancing geoheritage stewardship.

This year’s Pardee Keynote Symposia will traverse especially timely terrain:

  • Reconstructing ancient Earth: New perspectives on how to piece together the shifting jigsaw puzzle of continents and oceans.
  • Geoheritage in a resource-hungry world: Balancing cultural, scientific, and ecological values with the realities of extraction.
  • Minerals and society: From batteries to grid modernization, critical mineral supply chains are a geoscience challenge with global implications.
  • AI for water futures: How machine learning and digital twins are moving from pilots to practice in groundwater forecasting and management.

For the press: reporting resources and storytelling tools

Curated resources for journalists will support coverage of wildfires, climate change, volcanoes, planetary geology, and more. Science communication events will help translate complex findings into compelling narratives. On Sunday evening, 11 October, a panel moderated by science communicator Rachel Phillips will explore the journey from research to bookshelf with authors discussing fossils, ice loss, regenerative land practices, and regional geology. On Monday afternoon, 12 October, a screening and discussion will examine a recent Emmy-winning film on ice, memory, and environmental change, adapted from a widely reviewed book.

Who qualifies for media credentials

Complimentary press registration is available to:

  • Working press: Journalists, photographers, videographers, bloggers, authors, and filmmakers affiliated with recognized news outlets. Proof of assignment or professional identification is required.
  • Freelance science writers: Current membership in professional organizations (such as national or regional science writing associations) plus recent clips in 2024, 2025, or 2026 focused on science. Authorship of technical research alone does not qualify.
  • Public information officers: Representatives from scientific societies, academic institutions, and government agencies.

Press credentials are non-transferable and issued at the discretion of the conference press office.

Benefits and logistics

  • Access: Complimentary entry for qualifying media to technical sessions, the exhibit hall, and an on-site Media Resource Center designed for interviews, writing, and recharge—complete with coffee and light snacks.
  • Preregistration: Journalists are encouraged to complete media preregistration by Friday, 2 October 2026. Onsite options will be available afterward.
