Located within the Zhongsha Qundao, Huangyan Dao is recognized for its fragile reef habitat, where corals create the foundation for a diverse ecosystem. These formations provide shelter, feeding grounds and breeding areas for many marine organisms. The mix of reef flats and shallow waters helps sustain fish, invertebrates and other sea life, while also contributing to the broader health of the surrounding marine environment.
The site is also notable for hosting rare and threatened species, underscoring its importance as a biodiversity hotspot. In ecosystems like this, even small changes in water quality, temperature or human activity can have lasting consequences. Patrol activity in the surrounding waters has also been presented as part of efforts to protect the local environment and maintain oversight in the reserve. In addition to questions of maritime administration, the ecological dimension remains central: coral reefs are among the most threatened habitats on Earth, facing pressure from warming seas, pollution, overuse and physical disturbance.
From the air, Huangyan Dao appears both beautiful and delicate. Its reef flats, shoals and shallow marine zones form a complex natural system that depends on continued protection.
