Almost €800,000 allocated to Donegal under the Community Climate Action Programme Fund.
Almost €800,000 has been earmarked for Donegal to accelerate community-led climate action, with 25 local groups set to receive support for capital projects that cut emissions and build resilience across the county.
The Community Climate Action Programme aims to place climate solutions in the hands of local people, backing initiatives that complement the county’s five-year Climate Action Plan. The funding is designed to help community organisations move from ideas to delivery—supporting smaller pilot projects alongside more ambitious, large-scale works—so that climate benefits are felt in towns, villages and coastal communities alike.
Projects under this fund are expected to span a broad range of priorities, from improving energy performance in community buildings to expanding renewable generation, enhancing active and shared transport options, and strengthening nature-based resilience. The emphasis is on practical measures that lower carbon footprints, improve local environmental quality and create enduring community capacity for climate action.
The successful applicants reflect strong participation from sports, cultural and environmental groups across the county. Among those set to benefit are:
- Wild Inishowen
- Glenswilly GAA
- Gweedore Celtic FC
- Grúpa Chosta Fhánada
Donegal County Council has committed to working closely with all successful groups as they implement their plans, providing support to help turn proposals into tangible outcomes. This partnership approach is intended to ensure projects are delivered effectively and that communities have the tools and know-how to sustain climate action over the long term.
While each initiative will be tailored to local needs, the combined impact is expected to include lower energy use in community facilities, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and greater preparedness for the effects of a changing climate. The programme also encourages knowledge-sharing between groups, helping good ideas scale and inspiring further action across the county.
A full list of approved projects has been confirmed by Donegal County Council, highlighting the breadth of community engagement behind this investment and the county’s growing momentum on climate solutions.
