Mumbai’s Winter Weather: Pleasant Temperatures and Satisfactory Air Quality

Mumbai weather update: Minimum temperature 18 degrees Celsius; air quality satisfactory in city, Thane, Navi Mumbai

Mumbai woke to a mild morning, with the city’s minimum temperature hovering around 18 degrees Celsius and air quality holding in the satisfactory category across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. Conditions stayed comfortable through the day, typical of a gentle winter spell along the Konkan coast.

Daytime warmth was tempered in the island city and suburbs. Colaba registered a maximum of 28.5 degrees Celsius, while Santacruz reached 29.8 degrees Celsius—both a touch lower than the usual late-January peaks. Nighttime readings reflected the coastal moderation: Colaba dipped to 19.3 degrees Celsius and Santacruz to 17.7 degrees Celsius, keeping the city’s minimum close to the 18-degree mark highlighted in today’s update.

Air quality indicators pointed to broadly breathable conditions. Thane logged an Air Quality Index of 100 and Navi Mumbai 85, both within the “satisfactory” band. Such levels generally pose little risk to the wider public, though people with heightened sensitivity to pollution may prefer shorter durations of outdoor exertion during peak traffic hours.

Beyond the metropolis, a cooler-than-average trend was evident across parts of Maharashtra. Ahmednagar’s maximum settled at 28.9 degrees Celsius, about 1.8 degrees below the seasonal norm. Jalgaon reported a high of 28.4 degrees Celsius and Jeur 31.0 degrees Celsius, each remaining under typical values for this period. In western Maharashtra’s ghats and adjoining plains, the moderation was more pronounced: Kolhapur climbed only to 28.4 degrees Celsius, and Mahabaleshwar to 23.0 degrees Celsius—roughly 2 to 4 degrees below what is commonly observed at this time of year.

Nights turned noticeably cooler in the state’s interior. Ahmednagar slipped to 11.4 degrees Celsius, Jeur to 11.0 degrees Celsius, and Jalgaon to 13.5 degrees Celsius. Malegaon, by contrast, was relatively warmer overnight at 13.8 degrees Celsius, around 3.9 degrees higher than its typical minimum. Osmanabad recorded 14.0 degrees Celsius, Parbhani 15.6 degrees Celsius, and Udgir 16.8 degrees Celsius, all indicative of mild but seasonally consistent nights.

Along the coast and across western districts, the sea’s influence kept minimum temperatures on the warmer side compared with the interior. Dahanu registered 15.9 degrees Celsius and Ratnagiri 17.6 degrees Celsius, while Harnai recorded a night-time low of 20.4 degrees Celsius, marginally below its usual value.

The pattern underscores classic winter dynamics in the region: inland zones cool quickly under clear skies and drier air at night, while the shoreline retains warmth longer, thanks to the ocean’s stabilizing effect. Daytime readings a notch below average—and the absence of sharp fluctuations—point to a stable atmosphere. The “satisfactory” air quality suggests adequate dispersion of pollutants, aided by gentle breezes and relatively low humidity during peak daylight hours.

For residents, the takeaway is a string of comfortable days and crisp mornings: light layers suffice at dawn and dusk, with afternoons remaining pleasant. Keeping emissions in check—by minimizing idling, opting for public transport where possible, and avoiding trash burning—can help sustain the cleaner air that much of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region experienced today.

Overall, Maharashtra’s winter remains firmly in the “pleasant” column: daytime temperatures leaning slightly cooler than average across many interior districts, milder coastal nights, and no extreme swings reported.
