George C. Reifel Receives Honorary Doctorate from University Canada West
George C. Reifel, a distinguished figure in conservation, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University Canada West during their Spring Convocation ceremonies. The recognition took place on May 29, honoring Reifel with a Doctor of Laws degree in acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication to environmental conservation efforts.
Reifel represents the third generation of his family to lead businesses while also dedicating over 40 years to crucial conservation initiatives in North America, focusing largely on British Columbia. His work as a conservationist has significantly impacted the protection and enhancement of natural habitats, with a particular emphasis on wetland ecosystems crucial for migratory waterfowl.
As a pivotal figure in Ducks Unlimited Canada, Reifel holds the distinction of being the longest-serving director and once held a three-year term as national president—an unprecedented feat. His efforts with the organization have played an indispensable role in wetland conservation across North America, fostering environments that cater to the migratory patterns of waterfowl.
George C. Reifel is not only known for his hands-on conservation work but also for his commitment to public education and engaging youth in environmental stewardship. His initiatives have helped mentor future conservation leaders, establishing programs at Ducks Unlimited Canada designed to instill the value of environmental conservation in younger generations.
Advocating for science-driven conservation efforts, Reifel was instrumental in establishing the Institute of Wetland and Waterfowl Research in 1991, further solidifying his commitment to preserving natural habitats through scientific inquiry and evidence-based practices.
Over a span of 45 years, Reifel has been an active director of the British Columbia Waterfowl Society. This society manages the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a significant conservation area in the Fraser River Delta named in honor of his late father. The sanctuary, established in 1963, continues to be a critical habitat for various bird species.
Reifel’s influence extends beyond this sanctuary. As a director and advisor at The Nature Trust of British Columbia, he has played a key role in the protection of ecologically significant lands across the province. His involvement with the Pacific Salmon Foundation underscores his dedication to the conservation of wild Pacific salmon and their intricate ecosystems within British Columbia and the Yukon.
Reifel’s conservation efforts have not gone unrecognized. In 2021, he was awarded the BC Medal of Good Citizenship, and in 2023, he earned a place in the Order of British Columbia, acknowledging his significant contributions to the region’s ecological and social landscape.
Dr. Bashir Makhoul, UCW President and Vice-Chancellor, expressed high regard for Reifel’s enduring dedication to the environment, stating, “We are thrilled to bestow an Honorary Doctorate on George C. Reifel in recognition of his enduring commitment to conservation and volunteer leadership. His tireless efforts and ongoing dedication to various conservation projects have benefitted waterfowl, other wildlife, fish, plants and people in British Columbia and beyond.”
University Canada West, located in Vancouver, is known for its innovative approach to business and technology education. Offering a spectrum of undergraduate and graduate programs, the institution caters to both domestic and international students with a focus on career-aligned education. Their programs include the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication, Associate of Arts, and a Master of Business Administration, held across two modern campuses in downtown Vancouver.
