Guulabaa – Place of Koala: A Beacon of Sustainable Design and Biodiversity Conservation
In a prestigious recognition of visionary architecture and environmental stewardship, Guulabaa – Place of Koala has been awarded the Urban Land Institute (ULI) 2025 Asia Pacific Award for Excellence. This accolade shines a spotlight on pioneering projects in real estate and urban development that excel in design quality, sustainability, and community enhancement. Guulabaa stands as a shining example among twelve distinguished projects across the Asia Pacific, being one of only two from Australia to achieve this honor.
Born from the collaboration between the Forestry Corporation of New South Wales and renowned global design firm Gensler, Guulabaa emerged as a proactive response to the devastating 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires that severely affected koala habitats. The project embodies an innovative blend of cultural respect, ecological responsibility, and architectural ingenuity.
Crucial to its design is the integration of First Nations communities’ insights and the implementation of traditional cool burning techniques. These methods are not only instrumental in mitigating bushfire risks but also in rejuvenating forest ecosystems. The construction utilized sustainably sourced native hardwoods, setting a new standard for eco-centric and culturally sensitive design practices.
“Guulabaa demanded a redefinition of regenerative architecture. It focuses on thoughtful design, attentive listening, and a deep respect for the land,” shares Ken McBryde, Design Director at Gensler Australia. “This project exemplifies the potential of collaborating with clients, stakeholders, and Indigenous knowledge holders to achieve long-term positive impacts. ULI’s recognition is a testament to this shared vision.”
Nestled within a sprawling 25-hectare expanse of Cowarra State Forest, NSW, Guulabaa, meaning “Place of Koala” in the Gathang language, serves as a vibrant fusion of conservation, cultural storytelling, and eco-tourism. Visitors are invited to explore elevated timber walkways and immersive educational spaces that bring First Nations-led narratives to life, fostering a deeper connection to wildlife, heritage, and environmental management.
“Guulabaa transcends the mission of protecting koalas alone. It unites people across various generations, cultures, and disciplines to nurture the land and envision a harmonious future where nature and communities flourish together,” says Kathy Lyons, Senior Manager, Country and Community at the Forestry Corporation of NSW. “Its innovative model is already sparking similar initiatives across New South Wales, and the recognition by ULI affirms its powerful and scalable approach when executed with respect and care.”
Now setting the benchmark for forest-based conservation initiatives in Australia, Guulabaa serves as a source of inspiration for four additional proposed forest tourism sites across NSW. It stands as a testament to the synergies of design, Indigenous wisdom, and environmental conservation in safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable tourism, and creating meaningful spaces with enduring impact.
In light of these accolades, Guulabaa not only exemplifies sustainability but also reinforces the vital role of community collaboration and traditional knowledge in crafting resilient and regenerative environments for future generations.
