
A crisis we can’t ignore
Bangladesh’s fertilizer lifeline is being squeezed by a worsening gas crunch, and the consequences reach far beyond factory gates. When a nation must import the majority of the nutrients that feed its fields—now more than two-thirds by official tallies—the warning lights for food security are flashing red. This isn’t a temporary hiccup. It’s a structural fault line in our energy and agricultural systems that we can no longer pretend is manageable.
Why fertilizer has become the pressure point
Fertilizer plants rely on natural gas both as a feedstock and a fuel. As domestic supply tightens, plants have been forced into cycles of curtailment and shutdown, eroding output and pushing Bangladesh to procure more from volatile global markets. Every tonne not produced at home increases exposure to price spikes, currency swings, and shipping bottlenecks—risks that can quickly cascade into higher food prices and reduced yields for farmers.
For a nation of roughly 170 million, staking the backbone of agriculture on external supplies is an invitation to instability. Fertilizer availability and affordability are decisive for crop productivity; when that chain weakens, the impacts ripple from smallholder plots to national grain reserves.
How we arrived here
The trajectory has been years in the making. Declining output from mature gas fields was known, yet exploration lagged and modernization of infrastructure fell behind demand. Efforts to diversify energy sources remained tentative, and renewable power—while growing—has not expanded at the speed required to shoulder industrial loads or free up gas for priority uses. In response, emergency imports patched shortfalls but locked the country into higher costs and a widening demand–supply gap.
The fertilizer sector’s struggles simply expose the fragility of a broader energy system stretched thin, where short-term fixes have substituted for long-term planning.
What must change now
- Stabilize gas supply while transitioning: Accelerate appraisal and development of proven fields, rehabilitate underperforming wells, and cut methane leakage through rigorous monitoring. Build redundancy in transmission to reduce outages that force plant shutdowns.
- Use LNG as a bridge, not a crutch: Expand capacity selectively with flexible contracts, seasonal storage, and price hedging to avoid locking in high-cost exposure. Prioritize supply to sectors where gas has no easy substitute—fertilizer chief among them—while progressively moving power generation toward cleaner alternatives.
- Fast-track renewables with grid readiness: Scale solar on public land, industrial rooftops, canals, and reservoirs; advance wind in coastal and delta regions; pilot offshore wind where feasible. Pair this build-out with grid upgrades, battery storage, and demand response so variable power can reliably displace gas in electricity, freeing more molecules for industry.
- Boost efficiency across the economy: Mandate energy audits and retrofits in fertilizer plants—modern ammonia-urea technologies, heat recovery, and cogeneration can sharply cut gas intensity. Extend efficiency programs to textiles, brick kilns, and buildings with standards, financing, and enforcement to reduce overall system strain.
- Align pricing with protection for the vulnerable: Move tariffs gradually toward cost-reflective levels to curb waste and enable realistic planning, while using targeted cash support or vouchers to shield small farmers from fertilizer price shocks. Transparency in procurement and distribution is essential to prevent leakage and hoarding.
- Strengthen supply security for nutrients: Build a strategic fertilizer reserve and diversify import sources and contract types. Improve seasonal demand forecasting and gas allocation so plants can run steadily ahead of peak agricultural windows.
- Invest in the future: green ammonia pilots: Begin small-scale projects that blend renewable hydrogen with natural gas in ammonia production. Though not an overnight solution, early investment will position Bangladesh for lower-carbon, domestically produced fertilizer as technology costs fall.
The cost of delay
Failing to act will raise the bill on multiple fronts: costlier imports drain foreign currency, intermittent supply undermines farmer confidence, and food inflation erodes household resilience. Energy insecurity also deters private investment, slows industrial growth, and narrows fiscal space for social priorities. In a climate-vulnerable country, brittle food systems amplify the damage from floods, cyclones, and heatwaves by making recovery more expensive and less certain.
Conversely, a coordinated pivot offers compounding benefits. Every megawatt of renewable power that displaces gas in the grid frees fuel for domestic fertilizer. Every efficiency gain stretches scarce supply. Every step toward cleaner production reduces air pollution and future carbon constraints. And every improvement in governance—clear rules, credible pricing, transparent tenders—lowers risk and attracts capital.
A narrow window to restore balance
The fertilizer crunch is a clear verdict on delayed decisions. It is also a roadmap to solutions if we choose to read it that way: stabilize gas in the near term; build resilient, cleaner power quickly; protect farmers through smart policy; and seed the next generation of fertilizer production. The alternative is drifting deeper into dependency, where external shocks dictate the price of food on our tables.
Treat this as the structural alarm it is. Bangladesh’s food security—and the stability that flows from it—depends on urgent, sustained action now.
