The Gorakhpur Nuclear Power Project, currently under development, is poised to significantly bolster India’s energy infrastructure with the construction of four 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). The initiative represents a substantial advancement in nuclear capability, set to provide Haryana with a considerable share of power. Upon completion, half of the plant’s generated electricity will strengthen Haryana’s energy reserves, marking a major step forward in the region’s power capacity.

According to recent estimates, the plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations by March 2031. This timeline reflects the ambitious yet strategic approach to enhancing India’s nuclear energy production capacity.

During a recent assessment, detailed presentations on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities spearheaded by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) were shared. A dedicated investment of Rs 75 crore has been channelled into infrastructure and community welfare projects. These initiatives include the construction of roads, educational institutions, healthcare provisions through mobile medical units, and the development of an Astro Turf Hockey Ground for sports advancement.

Additionally, NPCIL has focused on skill enhancement and the dissemination of nuclear knowledge through various programs. Educational campaigns and awareness efforts have reached academic settings, fostering better understanding of nuclear energy and safety. The “Atom on Wheels” mobile exhibition van serves as a critical tool in these outreach efforts, aiming to enlighten communities about nuclear technology and its benefits.

Manohar Lal lauded the substantial efforts of NPCIL and emphasized the pivotal role that nuclear power plays in realizing clean, secure, and reliable energy solutions essential for India’s sustainable future.

In recent discussions, the central government has urged states to examine potential locations conducive to nuclear power development. This strategic direction underlines the country’s commitment to long-term energy sustainability. The concept extends to coastal states like Goa, where feasibility studies for nuclear projects are set to contribute to regional energy security strategies.

India currently generates eight gigawatts of nuclear power, with plans to exponentially increase this capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2047. This ambitious target reinforces India’s resolve in augmenting its nuclear energy output as part of a broader energy diversification strategy.

Further stressing the significance of operational excellence, the Union Minister advocated for improvements in utility management, especially within Goa. Enhancing efficiency and expanding the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid were highlighted as key measures to reduce power supply costs and improve overall efficiency.

The ongoing projects and future aspirations underscore a concerted effort to embrace a nuclear-powered future, ensuring consistency in power supply while addressing environmental and sustainability objectives. Such initiatives not only promise a robust power infrastructure but also fortify the nation’s energy independence and security.
