Green Network Study for Sustainability Launched

In an era where environmental sustainability is at the forefront of global priorities, the telecommunications sector is not being left behind. A groundbreaking initiative has recently been launched, focusing on curating more sustainable networks and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

Globe Telecom Inc., a prominent player in the telecommunications industry, has been pivotal in this initiative. The company participated in a new study conducted by GSMA Intelligence, known as the Green Network Index (GNI), which aims to set benchmarks for sustainability within the telecom industry.

The GNI study represents a pioneering effort to evaluate and promote greener network practices. By being one of the only six companies worldwide to be part of this initial research, Globe Telecom showcases its commitment to integrating eco-friendly practices into its operations.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s chief sustainability and corporate communications officer, highlighted the crucial role of collaboration in advancing towards a sustainable telecom sector. This initiative underscores Globe’s dedication to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through systematic sustainable practices.

Improving energy efficiency, adopting renewable energy, and enhancing overall network sustainability are at the core of this endeavor. Apple Evangelista, Globe’s head of sustainability and social responsibility, pointed out that the insights gleaned from the GNI study will be instrumental in refining these strategies.

The momentum towards more ecologically responsible telecommunications networks continues to gather pace globally. A significant 70 percent of telecom operators, representing a substantial portion of industry revenues, are now aligning their strategies with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) on reducing emissions.

This shift towards sustainable practices is largely motivated by escalating energy costs, which can constitute 15-20 percent of operational expenses for telecom operators. Consequently, there is a growing imperative to prioritize energy efficiency.

Simultaneously, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting has gained traction, becoming an essential factor for credit-rating agencies and financial analysts. This underlines the necessity for standardized metrics to assess sustainability in the sector.

In response to this necessity, the GSMA Intelligence developed the Green Network Index. This index consolidates multiple sustainability factors into one comprehensive metric, thus enhancing comparability among telecom operators and guiding their efforts to enhance environmental sustainability.

As Tim Hatt, head of research at GSMA Intelligence, points out, monitoring the progress of mobile network operators in energy sustainability is essential to effectuate meaningful change. The GNI facilitates informed decision-making for operators aspiring for a more sustainable future.

Building on GSMA Intelligence’s previous energy efficiency analyses, the GNI has evolved into a holistic index. This includes considerations for energy and carbon efficiency, renewable energy use, network performance and availability, as well as vertical enablement.

This initial round of the Green Network Index study marks a significant step toward influencing industry standards for sustainability.
