76 organisations to march in major AI data centre protest – see full list
A broad coalition of environmental groups, trade unions, community organisations and social justice campaigns is preparing to march through Edinburgh in opposition to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centres.
The demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, and will travel along the Royal Mile. It forms part of the international Stop Dirty Data Centres mobilisation, with more than 70 actions expected across 15 European countries during November.
Organisers are calling for greater scrutiny of the environmental and social consequences associated with large data centres. Such facilities can require substantial amounts of electricity and water, while their construction may place additional pressure on land, local infrastructure and energy networks.
Campaigners want the Scottish Government to hold a nationwide public consultation before introducing new guidance or approving further developments. They argue that residents, particularly those living near proposed sites, should have a meaningful role in decisions that could affect their communities and Scotland’s climate commitments.
The Scottish Government has previously indicated that it does not intend to conduct a public consultation on its forthcoming data centre guidance.
