Maharashtra weather update: Maharashtra sees slightly cooler temperatures on 77th Republic Day; AQI remains moderate to poor in several cities
Maharashtra marked the 77th Republic Day with a gentle dip in daytime heat across many locations, even as air quality hovered in the moderate band in and around the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. A blend of weak northerly flows and coastal sea-breeze moderation kept maximum temperatures a touch lower than earlier in the week, while stagnant morning air contributed to haze and trapped pollutants at the surface.
Daytime temperatures ease across districts
Temperatures slipped marginally in several cities, with coastal and highland contrasts standing out:
- Ahmednagar: 28.9°C (down 1.8°C from January 25)
- Aurangabad: 28.5°C (about 1.1°C below the seasonal norm)
- Dahanu: 26.0°C
- Harnai: 28.8°C
- Jalgaon: 29.5°C
- Jeur: 31.5°C
- Kolhapur: 29.2°C (slightly under average)
- Mahabaleshwar: 25.2°C (notably cooler, consistent with hill-station conditions)
- Malegaon: 27.6°C
- Mumbai (Colaba): 29.6°C
- Mumbai (Santacruz): 30.5°C
- Nasik: 29.1°C
- Osmanabad: 31.0°C
- Parbhani: 29.5°C
- Ratnagiri: 32.6°C
- Sangli: 30.6°C
- Satara: 30.7°C
- Sholapur: 31.7°C
- Udgir: 30.0°C
Hill stations and elevated interiors remained the most comfortable through the afternoon, with Mahabaleshwar leading the cool pack. Along the Konkan, the sea breeze helped curb extremes, though Ratnagiri still topped the chart with a warmer 32.6°C.
Nights stay mild; anomalies vary by location
Overnight conditions were largely pleasant along the coast and mild inland. Minimum temperatures included:
- Harnai: 21.2°C
- Mumbai (Colaba): 21.0°C
- Ratnagiri: 20.4°C
Against local normals, Malegaon registered the sharpest negative anomaly, coming in about 3.3°C below average. In contrast, Udgir, Sholapur, and Kolhapur saw slightly warmer-than-usual nights, a reminder of how local topography, urbanization, and wind patterns can tilt temperatures in opposite directions across short distances.
Forecast: hazy mornings, patchy clouds later
Expect shallow haze in the morning hours, with partly cloudy skies developing toward evening and night across the city and its suburbs. For Mumbai, the India Meteorological Department indicates a maximum near 31°C and a minimum around 20°C. Light winds during early hours are likely to limit pollutant dispersion before the sea breeze picks up through the afternoon.
Air quality: moderate overall, with pockets of stress
Mumbai’s Air Quality Index sits at 125, squarely in the moderate category. Thane is at 128 and Navi Mumbai at 105—also moderate. Sensitive groups, including people with asthma, chronic lung disease, or heart conditions, may experience discomfort during peak traffic hours or in areas with construction dust. Limiting strenuous outdoor activity in the late morning and evening—when mixing heights are lower—can help reduce exposure. Simple steps such as using well-fitted masks in high-pollution corridors and ventilating indoor spaces during cleaner afternoon windows can also make a difference.
What’s driving the pattern?
Early-springlike conditions often emerge at this time of year: cooler northerly drafts behind weak western disturbances can trim maximum temperatures for a day or two, especially over the interior plateau. Along the coast, a timely sea breeze acts as a natural thermostat but can also trap pollutants close to the surface when morning wind speeds are light. As the season edges toward pre-monsoon months, these day-to-day swings will continue, with air quality highly sensitive to wind direction, speed, and localized emissions.
